Gog is having an Indie Pinata game sale you may want to check out

Online game store gog.com announced a week long Indie Pinata event yesterday that combines game deals with options to get mystery games.

I check gog.com first whenever I want to purchase a game before I look elsewhere. Core reasons for that are that games are offered without any form of digital rights management on gog, that it has a 30 day money back guarantee, that it does not just replace the Dollar sign with an Euro sign in its store, and that it often offers tons of extras for games.

The main downside right now is that lots of games are not offered on gog. Most mainstream publishers ignore gog for new releases due to the DRM-free nature of game releases on the platform.

While you get some great games there, Pillars of Eternity or The Witcher 3 for instance, I would not hold my breath to get the next Fallout, Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty on that platform any time soon.

The Indie Pinata Sale

indie pinata

Since major publishers don’t publish their games on gog.com, it is independent games and classic games that make up the bulk of the catalog.

The sale celebrates indie games by offering a selection for up to 80% off from regular pricing. You find Legend of Grimrock 2 there for 75% off, Hotline Miami for 80% off, or Sunless Sea for 33% off.

These titles get replaced every 48 hours with new ones until the sale ends on September 18th, 2015.

In addition to discounts that you get right away, you may pay $3 (€2.69 if you live in Euro-land) once or multiple times to get surprise games that are priced (retail) anywhere from $9.99 to $44.99.

Since you don’t know what you get, there is a chance that you may own a game already. Maybe you bought it on Steam which gog.com would not know about.

I suggest you check the “gift this order” option on the checkout page as you will get codes for the games instead of the games being added to the game library of your account right away. This way you can trade it with others if you already own it.

I tried the Pinata thingy once and received Jazzpunk, an indie game that retails for €13.49 for €2.69.

So, if you have some spare store credit or money, and are not opposed to the idea of trying new indie games, then you may want to whack the Pinata a couple of times to see what it gets you.
