LG G5 release date, price, features and rumors
LG G5 specs
Details on the LG G5 specs are sparse, but there are a few rumors doing the rounds. Unlike many other top manufacturers, LG has persisted with removable batteries, which has proved a popular decision, and we hope to see that continue with the LG G5.
However, while the battery of the LG G4 was removable, it wasn’t up to the standard of the G2’s. It’s unacceptable that so many models in 2015 have worse battery life than their predecessors and we hope 2016 – and the LG G5 – will reverse that trend. No pressure, LG.
Although there’s little substance to it, a Reddit user posted a supposed rundown of the LG G5 specs on December 23.
The post suggest that the LG G5 will have a 5.3-inch screen, a metal unibody design, microSD card support, 3 GB RAM, a Snapdragon 820 processor and a dual rear camera. All in all, it seems to size up as a machine worth some consideration. Take a closer look over at Reddit.
This goes against a previous report that came via phoneArena.com in early December and said that the display would be a 5.6-inch QHD number.
The all-important button on the back of the G4 looks set to remain on G5 model, which is good thing given that users generally consider it useful.
LG G5 release date and price
An unconfirmed report from South Korea in early December suggests that the LG G5 will be officially announced in early February, with a launch to follow mere weeks later.
The news is surprising as it would suggest that LG has thinly veiled intentions of competing directly with Samsung’s Galaxy S7, or of snatching some early sales by pushing its flagship out shortly before its national competitor’s – the Galaxy S7 is expected to be released in March.
Various media outlets, including The Electronic Times, are buzzing with speculation that the device will make its first appearance at MWC 2016, which takes place between February 22 and 25 in Barcelona, Spain.
In mid-January, LG issued an invitation to an event to be held at MWC in Barcelona on February 21. The invite comes with the tagline “play begins.” What this refers to exactly is open to question, but, at the minute, the most likely excuse for the event would appear to be the LG G5.
In terms of price, the LG G4 cost only a little more than its predecessor, the G3, and hopefully this trend will continue with the G5. If it does, the G5 is likely to cost a little less than its nearest competitors at the top end of the market.
LG G5 design
The appearance of the LG G4 wasn’t universally loved, but LG has a reputation for adapting its products to suit market demands, so we’re hoping to see a few improvements in the LG G5 design.
Most notably, we’d like to see LG abandon its use of plastic. Virtually no other manufacturer still uses plastic for its high-end phones, and while we’re on the subject, I’m not sure who thought leather was an acceptable material to cover a phone with, but they were wrong. Very wrong.
In accordance with our wishes, a November rumor, coming via GSMArena, suggests that the LG G5 will come in a metal unibody construction, which would mean there would almost certainly be no removable battery, which will likely upset many LG G fans.
There’s also speculation that the LG G5 will have a curved screen. Perhaps the two (unofficial) renders created by Jermaine Smit (pictured below) could serve as inspiration?
LG G5 features
The LG G4 was missing a number of key functions, including fingerprint unlocking and a type C USB port, so we’d like to see these among the LG G5 features. Could LG be going even further with the G5 though?
The rumor that the LG G5 would feature an iris scanner, which first appeared in WhoWiredWho, has caused quite a stir. It has since been suggested that LG have been working with biometrics company Irience to make scanning functional in the first half of 2016, suggesting that it could be ready in time for the G5.
If the rumors are true, this could be the latest in a long line of innovations that have often set LG apart from their competitors. Pursuing an iris scanner while the other big boys all start to introduce fingerprint scanners would be true to form.
LG G5 camera
Will the LG G5 camera beat the one on the G4? That might be a big ask, purely because of how good the G4 camera is – it’s tough to comprehend just how good until you use it. It packs 16 MP, and has a large f/1.8 aperture, Optical Image Stabilization 2.0 and laser autofocus, but I’d hope to see at least an equally good camera in the LG G5.
Rumors suggest that the LG G5’s rear camera will be an impressive 21 MP, and the front-facing one will be 8 MP.
Are you excited for the LG G5? What features would you like to see?
